Biographical details

I graduated from the QuFu Normal University,
China in 2007 with a BSc in Psychology. I started to do a
M.A. in History of Education at the QuFu Normal University
in 2007. I joined the Department Experimental Psychology at
the University of Bristol in 2008 as a taught postgraduate,
and completed an M.Sc in Research Methods in Psychology in
2009 and my dissertation, supervised by Markus Damian, investigated
lexical access in Mandarin Chinese speech production in the
picture-picture interference paradigm. In September 2009,
I began a three-year PhD supervised by Markus Damian.
Research
interests

The aim of my Ph. D is to investigate the role of phonology
in written production of single and multiple words. Early
theory argues that handwriting entirely depend on the retrieval
of phonological codes (‘phonological mediation’
theories). However, ‘orthographic autonomy’ view
argues that orthographic representation can be directly accessed
from semantic representation, without phonological codes.
Most relevant studies which tried to solve this controversy
have investigated single word written production. However,
as proposed by Tainturier and Rapp (2001), the role of phonology
in writing may be more pronounced in multiple words production
than single word production. This is because the demand on
short-term memory being greater for multiple words than for
single words, and rehearsal in short-term memory is generally
believed to involve phonological codes. I propose to compare
the role of phonology in single and multiple words written
production directly.
