Biographical details

I left school at 16 and joined BT’s
research and development department as an apprentice lab technician.
After finishing my apprenticeship and working in a lab for
a few years I went to study Electronic Systems Engineering
at the University of Essex. When I graduated I returned to
BT to work on the development of video compression technologies,
and designed and ran one of the first commercial grade MPEG
encoding facilities. I subsequently managed development projects
that ranged from educational applications for schools, to
user interfaces for groupworking products, and went on to
lead a consultancy group specialising in technologies for
managing enterprise scale web sites. I left BT to pursue my
interest in psychology, and in 2004 began a degree in Experimental
Psychology at Bristol. I graduated in 2007 and stayed at Bristol
to start a PhD with Dr Chris Benton. I’m a Member of
the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Research
interests

I’m interested in the way we represent and process information
about faces. My undergraduate project used an adaptation paradigm
to investigate the way we encode shape and texture information
for faces. My current work also uses adaptation techniques,
this time to explore how we represent and process facial expressions.
