Why
study Experimental Psychology at Bristol?
The School of Experimental Psychology and
the University of Bristol are part of the Russell Group of
universities. The Russell
Group represents the 20 leading UK universities which
are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding
teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with
business and the public sector.
Five reasons to study at Bristol
1. Fun. We work with ideas, people and techniques that we
enjoy. Simply put, we want to find students who will share
a sense of fun and adventure in our science.
2. Expertise and knowledge. If Rome wasn’t built in
a day, neither is quality science. Staff are diverse in backgrounds
and experience, but united in their meticulous, astute and
inspired approach to scientific enquiry.
3. Excellent teaching. A collegiate, interactive and friendly
atmosphere, with small staff-student ratios, is the perfect
environment to share our aptitude and passion for psychological
science.
4. Word-class research. We are a top-ranked research department
in the Faculty
of Science that means we deliver our current research
at the highest national and international levels, with a long-tradition
of supporting some of the most brilliant minds in psychological
research.
5. Quality of Life: Bristol has a vibrant, active and stimulating
arts and cultural scene; from late-night hip-hop, to afternoon
theatre, to lunch-time classical concerts; there is much to
entertain. As a historical gateway to South-west England,
mountain-walking in Wales, surfing in Cornwall, and festivals
in Somerset are within easy distance: no wonder we love
living here.
What
our students say
Who comes to study Experimental Psychology?
Psychology is the science of behaviour and
mental processes, and all single and joint honours psychology
degrees at Bristol follow a curriculum which places fundamental
emphasis on experimental methods and objective measurement.
We have a strong scientific approach and significant biological
content in our psychology degrees.
Studying Psychology at Bristol is attractive so we select
a small proportion of students from a large number of applications.
Our Admissions procedure is transparent, consistent, fair
and justifiable to everyone – find out more about our
principles
and procedures. Our approach is holistic: we read each
and all of every application.
What do we expect?
1. Honesty and integrity. There are no short-cuts to entry
to our course: we look for applications that are true to the
person they represent.
2. Academic excellence. We select people who can demonstrate
the potential for academic excellence in psychological science.
3. Diversity of thinking. The breadth of study within Experimental
Psychology demands that our students need to be flexible in
their thinking, and bring knowledge and skills from a range
of academic disciplines. For example, there is no requirement
to study a course in Psychology to join this degree, but we
prefer students to demonstrate a strong scientific background
such as one or two sciences at ‘A’ level (or equivalent).
4. Informed choice. We want people to be knowledgeable about
our degree courses, and our approach to studying psychology,
so that they make a positive choice.

and potential of the people we select. We welcome and support
diversity within our students including deaf
and disabled students. We accommodate the multiplicity
of people’s educational experience, whether mature
applicants, or international
applicants, or applicants with educational or social disadvantage
as described in our widening
